GeTxUp's Artist Spotlight Interview - Wordplay 187
Congratulations on winning Song of the Podcast, you were up against some great competition!
We played your song Life of 187 and the fans voiced their opinions and voted for you!
Getting into the music, the project is called Goat Day, and first thing we noticed was the goat logo on the project. What does that mean to you?
Wordplay: I’m not really into signs and things kinda why I’m glad I’m not deaf they have a whole language dedicated to them. However, a woman I was seeing a while back told me that my sign was a Capricorn and that I was a goat which is fitting lol. So I chose to go with that logo and it was dropped on the last day of Capricorn season for that exact reason, might make it a yearly thing.
Defintely would be a dope yearly tradition! You're very proficient with the bars! We even caught a few Chowder references on your song It Doesn't matter like;
'You radda radda you know i keep a few choppa choppas
What goes around comes around like some helicopters"
What artist would you say first introduced you to punchlines, and do you actually watch Chowder?
Wordplay: I actually loved the show Chowder and I had literally just watched the Christmas special while recording that song. The first rapper I actually heard was Big Pun, even though I was only 4 years old when I heard the song, I was mesmerized by the way he twisted words up. So I would say that’s who got me into punchlines, wordplay, etc. I also wrote my first song when I was 4 lol.
Salute to Chowder and big R.I.P. to Pun for sure. Also on It Doesn't matter you say;
I keep the heat in the winter cuz I was born down south
What city are you representing, and how did living in the South influence your rhymes?
Wordplay: I’m from Fayetteville, NC just like Cole and Morray. I wouldn’t say south influenced my style though, I can hear anything and feel influenced to be honest.
Well we're glad to see Fayetteville has more talent in the city. We caught some more witty lines from you on this EP like;
"Keep the heat like B Ball you can measure me in Fahrenheit"
And
"Damn my credit must be A 1 cuz im all alone
Bitch from new orleans with kill head i call her super dome
Baseball ball wit lollipop hit licks run im home
Everywhere i go choppa ring like pick up the phone"
What is your mentality when it comes to putting together your bars?
Wordplay: Honestly it’s just the way I think and talk. If you ever held a convo with me, I legit just talk in punchlines and not on purpose either lol.
We definitely salute the attention paid to coming up with lines to make fans hit rewind. In addition to these moments we get some more introspective lines like;
"5 years old when a nigga like me picked up the chrome"
And
Seen alotta niggas die I'm desensitized
Having lost three to four people personally I can attest to how death can affect not only the creative process, but the mind as a whole. Has experiencing death changed your perspective on life at all?
Wordplay: I’ve seen so much death I actually don’t even flinch when I hear someone close to me died, which isn’t good but you know. Being around death definitely changed my perspective on life and since I don’t write it overall changed the way my songs go.
Our condolences for your loss for sure, we always like to get an artist's perspective on things like that. On the outro you say
Fell into depression like a nigga took a dive
What advice would you give to your younger self to deal with tough moments?
Wordplay: Just breathe cause some times, it just doesn’t get any better.
That's a fact. Sometimes you just gotta get through it. We definitely want to send a shout out the Music Over Mad Pod before we continue.
Here at GeTxUp.com we promote produce a variety of shows through 1000 Winters Media, including The Undrground Podcast so we always want to salute other podcast in the culture.
Can you tell us more about it and let us know where we can tune in?
